- As a senior at
Stockdale High School, David was named to the 1996 All-Star team in
Gridiron Greats and earned All-West Region honors in Prep
Star Magazine.
- David was named
an All-American by the National Strength Coaches Association after his
junior year at Fresno State.
- During the 2000
season, David and his Fresno State teammates logged 20,872 miles traveling
to and from their seven road games.
- Among the impressive
lineup of trophies David earned in 2001 were the Johnny Unitas Golden
Arm Award and the Sammy Baugh Award.
- David finished
his career at Fresno State with 7,849 yards on 587 of 934 passes with
70 touchdowns The only two quarterbacks in school history to throw for
more yards were Mark Barsotti (8,093) and Kevin Sweeney (10,808). David’s
career completion percentage of 62.8 broke Billy Volek's Bulldog record
of 60.4.
- When David signed
with the Texans, Houston owner Bob McNair presented Melody with a bouquet
of yellow roses.
- Houston’s
win over Dallas marked the first triumph for an expansion team in its
debut in 41 years. The last QB to turn the trick was Fran Tarkenton
of the Minnesota Vikings, who beat the Chicago Bears in 1961.
- Before getting
married, Melody attended a junior college in Bakersfield. Currently
she works with a daycare program and would like to someday go back to
school and earn her teaching degree.
- David and Melody
have three children. Their oldest, Austin, was diagnosed with juvenile
diabetes in January of 2005. The couple immediately began working to
raise funds for research into the disease.
- David's parents,
who were born near Dallas, grew up huge Cowboys fans. So strong was
their allegiance, they gave youngest son Derek the middle name of “Dallas.”
- David has great
respect for the military. Not only does he have a brother-in-law who
served in Iraq, he participated in ESPN’s “Jocks to GIs
Direct” program. David volunteered for an email pen pal, and hooked
up with Michael McKenzie, an Air Force master sergeant.
