- In 1992, Carlos
topped the Florida State League in hits (157), doubles (30), home runs
(30), slugging percentage (.579), on-base percentage (.402) and RBIs
(100). No one in the league had reached the century mark in runs driven
home since 1984.
- On July 6, 1996
Carlos became the 29th player in MLB history to hit a ball out of Tiger
Stadium.
- When Roger Clemens
joined the Blue Jays in 1997, Carlos volunteered to surrender his #21
jersey, the Rocket's number in Boston. Appreciative of the gesture,
Clemens responded by giving Carlos a $20,000 Rolex.
- In the winter of
1999, Carlos traveled through Europe with Shawn Green and another close
friend.
- In 1999, Carlos
joined Fred McGriff and Joe Carter as the only Blue Jays to post three
consecutive 30+ home run seasons.
- In July of 2002,
Carlos broke Tony Fernandez's franchise record of 403 consecutive games
played. His streak was snapped several weeks later—at 432—when
a sore back landed him on the DL.
- In 2002, Carlos
became the first Blue Jay in franchise history to post at least 30 HR
is six straight seasons, and drive in at least 100 runs in five straight
seasons.
- In 2005, Carlos
became the 9th major leaguer to hit 30 or more homers in nine straight
seasons.
- Carlos belted his
400th home run—a grand slam—in a memorable 8-7 comeback
win against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006.
- Carlos won the
Roberto Clemente Award and Thurman Munson Award in 2006 for his community
service efforts.
- In 2006, Carlos
became just the fourth player in history to record 10 straight 30-homer
seasons. The first three were Jimmie Foxx, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa.
- Carlos waited longer
than any other active player—1,170 games—to play in his
first postseason contest.
- Carlos is the fifth
American Leaguer to hit four homers in a game. The others were Lou Gehrig,
Rocky Colavito, Pat Seerey and Mike Cameron. Fifteen players in all
have slugged four in a game, but only six have done it in consecutive
at bats.
- Carlos is Toronto's
all-time leader in doubles, home runs, RBIs and slugging percentage.
- Carlos enjoys yoga.
He takes classes in Toronto a couple of times a week.
- Carlos's commitment
to those less fortunate is heartfelt and significant. His Extrabases
Foundation assists charitable causes dedicated to improving the lives
of children in Puerto Rico and North America. In Toronto, he has refurbished
a pair of rundown playing fields, and regularly visits local schools
to encourage kids to work hard.
- In April of 2001,
Carlos joined singer Ricky Martin and boxer Felix Trinidad to protest
the U.S. Navy's use of Vieques, an island off the coast of Puerto Rico,
as a bomb-testing site. The trio took out full-page ads in the New
York Times and Washington Post asking for the manuevers
to stop.
- Carlos uses a 35-inch,
34-ounce bat, one of the biggest pieces of lumber in baseball.
