  • In 1997, the USC players were furnished with the muscle-building dietary supplement Creatine. He tried it but quickly backed off when he learned there was no information on its long-term effects.
  • Morgan finished his college career ranked third all-time on USC’s home run list behind Geoff Jenkins and Mark McGwire.
  • Morgan won championships as a college player and as a pro in 1998. His minor league teams also won titles in 1999 and 2000.
  • Morgan’s finest day at the plate came on May 15, 2000, when he belted three homers against the San Francisco Giants.
  • Morgan’s closest friend on the Astros is shortstop Adam Everett. Morgan befriended Everett, an All-American shortstop drafted by the Red Sox, when they played each other in Rookie ball in 1998.
  • Morgan’s .291 average n 2003 was tops among NL third basemen.
  • Morgan was plagued by panic attacks during the 2004 season. He feared he might be benched and never play again.
  • Morgan tied Doug Rader’s club record for homers by a third baseman with 25 in 2003. He obliterated that mark in 2005.
  • Among the players Mike Gillespie helped develop at USC were Barry Zito, Mark Prior, Jason Lane, Jeff Cirillo, Eric Munson, Geoff Jenkins, Jacque Jones and Bret and Aaron Boone. Unlike Morgan, they all received scholarships.
  • Morgan and Christi live in Orlando during the off-season.
