Though he caddied
as a teenager, Cliff has never had a burning desire to play golf. Part
of his distaste for the links came as a result of a run-in with a member
at Flossmoor Country Club. After being treated rudely by a loud-mouthed
golfer in the summer of 1988, Cliff swore off the sport.
Cliff hit for the
cycle twice in 1992 for the Class-A Albany Polecats.
Cliff was immortalized
with a bobblehead doll by the Marlins in 2001. He celebrated with a
pair of home runs.
Cliff lockered next to B.J. Upton in 2008. The young star attributes his growth as a hitter to the hours he spent picking Cliff’s brain.
Prior to joining
the Rays, Cliff had a .382 average at Tropicana Field—the second
best all-time of any player.
Cliff is a religious
man who says he tries to read the bible every night.
Cliff's memorabilia
collection includes framed jerseys of Tony Gwynn, Craig Biggio and Gary
Sheffield, an oil painting of Mark McGwire, and pictures and baseballs
autographed by Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Wayne Gretzky, Raul Mondesi
and Andres Galarraga.
If it was up to
him, Cliff says he would add the DH to the National League.
Cliff's favorite
actors are Denzel Washington and Jada Pinkett. The two players he'd
pay to watch are Hank Aaron and Alex Rodriguez.
If Cliff ever pursues
a college degree, he's interested in studying engineering.
Cliff regularly
treated kids in Florida to dinner, autographed photos and tickets to
home games through his "Cliffhangers" program.
