Sergio Garcia

  • As a kid, Sergio’s parents called him “McEnroe” because he had long hair and he was a terrible sport.
  • At one point in his childhood, Sergio thought he would rather play soccer for Real Madrid than pursue a professional golf career.
  • Sergio’s victory in the 1997 British Boys’ Championship made him only the fourth Spaniard to win the event--and the first since Jose Maria Olazabal.
  • When Sergio turned pro in 1999, it was hardly fun and games. A senior at Colegio Rey Don Jaime in Castellon at the time, he studied most days while on the road, and was tutored in English by his parents. They also held mock press conferences to help him handle the growing media attention, and kept a close eye on his social life.
  • When he first began traveling as a pro, Sergio never went anywhere without PlayStation and Microsoft links, and had a big-screen TV installed in every hotel room he stayed in.
  • Sergio once withdrew from a pro event because of a severe case of acne.
