  • Only two minor leaguers hit more home runs than Marcus in 1998: Troy Glaus (35) and Chris Hatcher (36).
  • In 1999, Marcus and his Myrtle Beach teammates met the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the Carolina League championship series. They’re still waiting to crown the winner. With the series tied at two games apiece, play was suspended because of the threat of Hurricane Floyd.
  • Twice during his career, Marcus received Atlanta’s Hank Aaron Award as the organization’s top offensive performer in the minors.
  • Marcus recorded the first two-homer game of his career in September of 2002. The performance was particularly sweet because it came against the Pittsburgh Pirates with his brother watching.
  • In July of 2003, Marcus collected a hit in nine straight at-bats. The streak broke the Atlanta mark of eight set by Jeff Blauser, but fell one short of the National League record shared by 10 players.
  • Marcus posted 49 doubles in 2003, breaking the franchise record of 47 set by Tommy Holmes in 1945.
  • Marcus was one of six Braves to hit at least 20 home runs in 2003 (along with Javy Lopez, Gary Sheffield, Andruw Jones, Chipper Jones and Vinny Castilla). That tied the NL mark set by the Milwaukee Braves in 1965. The 1996 Baltimore Orioles and 2000 Toronto Blue Jays hold the major-league record with seven players with at least 20 HRs.
  • Marcus hit .357 with a homer and three RBIs against the Chicago Cubs in the 2003 NLDS. He delivered a clutch two-out, run-scoring single in Atlanta’s first victory of the series, and crossed home plate twice in the team’s other win. His big blast came off Kerry Wood.
  • Marcus’s 145 doubles between 2003 and 2006 were the most of any NL second baseman.
  • Marcus’s 45 doubles in 2005 ranked second behind Derrek Lee's 50 in the NL.
  • Marcus stole three bases in a 2005 game against the New York Mets.
  • The Rockies saw the best of Marcus during an otherwise unimpressive 2007 season. He .526 at Coors Field and .439 overall against the team.
  • Marcus’s nickname on the Braves is “Gilly” (pronounced “Jilly”). His brother calls him “Welby,” after the 1970s TV doctor, Marcus Welby.
  • Besides producing the Giles brothers, Granite Hills High School has sent a half-dozen other players to the major leagues. One of Brian’s teammates on the Grizzlies was Shane Spencer.
  • Among Marcus’s favorite ballparks are Minute Maid in Houston and the BOB in Arizona. He also loves day games at Wrigley Field.
  • After the death of their first child, Marcus and his wife, Tracy, were fortunate to have a healthy baby, a daughter named Arringtun Mae.
  • Marcus lists hunting and fishing among his favorite hobbies.
  • In 2006, Marcus was hospitalized with chest pains. He feared it might be a bad heart, but the diagnosis was acid reflux.
