  • J.J.'s cousin, John, ended up playing college ball at Arizona. As kids, the two had planned on starring for the Wildcats together.
  • J.J.'s first spring training appearance, in 2001, was memorable—for all the wrong reasons. Wearing No. 91, he was listed on the scoreboard as Bill Hall. Tim Hudson then fanned him with no problem at all.
  • In 2003, J.J. earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic qualifying team.
  • In 2005, J.J. became the fifth Brewer to make his major-league debut in the opening day starting lineup as a rookie. The first four were Paul Molitor (1978), Robin Yount (1974), Gorman Thomas (1973) and Pedro Garcia (1973).
  • When J.J. signed with the Brewers, language was included in his contract that said the team would pay for his college tuition if he ever decided to pursue a degree.
  • Earlier in his life, J.J. was a video game junkie. Today, he prefers to spend his free time working out, playing golf or racquetball and going to the movies.
  • J.J.'s favorite movie is The Rock, his favorite food is steak and his favorite place to vacation is Montana.
  • If J.J. didn't have the talent to play baseball, he thinks would have become a firefighter.
