- In grade school, Jarome
used to sell his lunch for money to buy video games. He claims his mother
always packed too much food, anyway.
- The first black
player to reach the NHL was Willie ORee of the 1957-58 Bruins.
- The last Flame
to hold the NHL scoring lead (albeit briefly) was Kent Magic Man Nilsson,
who nosed past Wayne Gretzky for several games during the 1980-81
season.
- In the Toruba
language of Nigeria, Iginla means Big Tree.
- Although of Nigerian heritage,
Jarome was born in Canada. The first Nigerian-born player to appear
in the NHL was Rumun Ndur of the Buffalo Sabres.
- While out to dinner one
night during the 2002 Olympics, Jarome learned that four avid hockey
fans at the same restaurant had driven all the way from Canada without
tickets to any games or a place to stay. On his own accord, Iginla walked
over to their table, introduced himself, and then booked a room for
them at the Marriott Courtyard. When they checked in, they discovered
that he had also paid for their accommodations.
- Calgary collectors had to
wait 10 years to add another card to their collection of 50-goal scorers.
In all, seven Flames have reached this plateau.
