- Roy left quite
a legacy at Holmes Community College. The tiny school now has one of
the best baseball programs in the state.
- At Holmes, Roy
was always looking for someone to play long-toss with. When no one was
available, he would take a bucket of balls to the outfield and wing
them into the backstop.
- Among Roy’s
minor league teammates in 1999 were future big leaguers Johan Santana,
Mike Gallo, Tim Redding and Aaron Miles.
- Roy twirled seven
shutout inning against Korea in a 4-0 victory in the the 2000 Olympics.
- Roy’s 1.94
ERA in 2000 was the lowest mark in the Texas League in 10 years.
- Roy retired 14
of the first 15 batters he faced in his first major league start, beating
the Dodgers 2-1.
- Roy was the third
pitcher in history whose team won his first eight major league starts.
The first was Fernando Valenzuela.
- Roy fanned a dozen
Brewers in a September 2001 game to become the first Astro rookie since
J.R. Richard to strikeout that many in a game.
- Roy led major league
rookies in ERA and winning percentage in 2001.
His 14 wins set the Houston record by a rookie.
- Roy finished third
in the 2004 Cy Young voting.
- Despite pitching
in a notorious hitter’s park, Roy has the lowest home ERA (2.62)
of any active starter with 500+ innings.
- In 2005, Roy became
the first NL pitcher (since Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling in 2002)
to register back-to-back 20-win seasons. The only other Astro to record
this feat was Joe Niekro, in 1979 and 1980.
- Through 2005, Roy
was unbeaten against the Reds in 14 career decisions.
- Roy’s willingness
to pitch inside triggered two “feuds” in 2005, with Michael
Barrett of the Cubs and Cliff Floyd of the Mets.
- At the close of
the 2005 season, Roy owned the best winning percentage in Houston history.
- Roy and the Astros
avoided arbitration after the 2004 season and came to terms on a two-year
deal worth almost $17 million.
- Roy’s wife,
Nicole, sang the National Anthem and God Bless America for Houston’s
18-inning clincher against the Braves in the 2005 Division Series.
- Roy and Nicole
had their first child, Arlee, in September of 2004. They spend the off-season
at his farm back home in Weir.
