- During a trip to Chicago
in 1996, Tony and his brothers got the thrill of a lifetime. Thanks
to a family contact, the boys were invited to watch the Bulls practice.
Tony shook hands with Scottie Pippen and had his picture taken with
Michael Jordan.
- Tony graduated from the
National Institute of Physical Education with a degree in Economics.
- As a rookie with the Spurs,
Tony went through many of the standard hazing rituals. One of his primary
jobs was to bring a box of doughnuts to the arena for game-day shootarounds.
- In 2005–06, Tony became the first guard since Butch Beard in 1974–75 to finish among the NBA’s top three in shooting percentage.
- In 2007, Tony became the first European-born player to be named NBA Finals MVP.
- Tony was such a sensation
back in France during his rookie season with the Spurs that he was interviewed
by writer Oliver Pheulpin for a story in L'Equipe, one of his
homeland's premier sports magazines. That honor is almost never bestowed
on someone so young.
- Fans in San Antonio
show their appreciation for Tony by waving banners that say "ON AIME
TONY" (We Love Tony).
- Tony is just the second
foreign-born player to start at point guard in the NBA. The first was
Steve Nash, who was born in South Africa and raised in Canada.
- Tony is an R&B
fan. Among his favorite musicians are Brian McKnight and Montell
Jordan.
He also likes rap, including Jay-Z and the Ruff Ryders.
- Tony loves French food,
and surprisingly has found a lot of food to suit his tastes in San Antonio.
He eats many of his meals at a restaurant called L'Etoile.
- Tony's parents are divorced.
His father lives in Chicago, and his mother in Paris. His brother, Terrence,
is a point guard at Northwestern University.
- Tony is the ambassador for Make A Wish France.
- Tony recorded a rap album in 2007. In his first video, Tim Duncan, Brent Barry, Nazr Mohammad and Robert Horry made cameos.
- Tony is good friends with soccer star Thierry Henry.
