- Ben is the first
undrafted player ever to be voted into the starting lineup of the NBA
All-Star Game.
- Ben wears wristbands
with the letters NFZ, which stand for "No Fly Zone."
- Add Ben to the
list of power forwards who flourished as soon as the Wizards gave up
on them. He joins the likes of Chris Webber and Rasheed Wallace.
- Ben has been immortalized
in bobblehead form four times in his career. The 2003 model featured
“real” hair (thanks to sponsor Dittrich Furs) and became
the hottest collectible in the league. The Pistons have also given out
“Braided Ben” and “Talking Ben” bobbleheads.
- Ben is married.
His wife’s name is Chanda. Devout Baptists, they live in Richmond
during the off-season and have two children, Ben Jr. and Bryce.
- During his two
seasons at Cuyahoga Community College, Ben made spending money working
in one of Charles Oakley’s car washes.
- Ben was named MVP
of the 1995 CIAA Tournament.
- Ben was the proudest
member of Team USA in 2001. When the team placed sixth at the World
Championship, it was the lowest point of his career.
- Ben is the first
Piston since Bob Lanier to finish in the NBA’s Top 10 in rebounding
and shot-blocking.
- When Ben first
came into the league, Brian Grant and Charles Oakley gave him the most
trouble under the boards. Today he says Kevin Garnett is the toughest
guy to box out.
- Ben became the
first Piston since Dennis Rodman to pull down 1,000 rebounds in a season.
- Whenever Ben grabs
a rebound during a home game, a fan in “Rebound Row” receives
a free t-shirt.
- Ben has tiny hands.
He can barely palm a basketball.
- Ben is a big fan
of professional wrestling. His all-time favorite wrestlers are "Hacksaw"
Jim Duggan, Andre the Giant and King Kong Bundy. He also owns an exact
replica of the WWE championship belt.
- Ben's nickname
is "Body." He got it when he was first traded to the Pistons.
Teammates began called him "Big Body" and then shortened it
to Body.
- Ben majored in
Criminal Justice at Virginia Union. He says he will consider law school
when his playing career is over.
