- When Nolan Ryan
threw the last of his seven no-hitters, as a Texas Ranger, Kerry was
there to see it.
- Kerry ended his
minor league career with a record of 21-11 in 55 starts, with 340 strikeouts
in 278 1/3 innings (an average of 11 K's per nine innings). Opponents
hit just .179 against him.
- Five years after
Kerry faced Ben Grieve in high school, they again gained noteriety,
this time as the NL and AL Rookies of the Year, respectively.
- Kerry fanned 13
in the game after his 20-K gem in May of 1998. His 33 strikeouts were
a record for consecutive starts.
- During his rehab
stint with Daytona in 2000, Kerry treated his minor-league teammates
to a steak dinner.
- Kerry is only the
third Cub to strike out four batters in one inning. The others were
Jim Davis in 1956 and Bill Bonham in 1974.
- In 2002 and 2003
Baseball America rated Kerry's curveball as the best in baseball.
- Kerry gave his
mom the baseball from his record-tying strikeout game and his dad got
Kerry's first home run ball.
- Kerry wears No.
34 in honor of Nolan Ryan.
- Kerry doesn't like
it when hitters ask to look at the ball when he's pitching. Eric Young
did it once, and Kerry responded by throwing the next one over his head.
- At Wrigley, fans
often run out of “K” cards and vendors sell out of foam
K's when Kerry pitches.
- Kerry has had numerous
nicknames since his 20-strikeout game in 1998: Special K, Kid K, KO,
K-Man, Kamikaze Wood, Triple K Wood, The Woodman, The Big Heat, Hard
Wood, Cannonball, Kid Fire, The Extinguisher, Prairie Fire, Texas Gold
and The Texas Tornado. But his teammates just call him Woody.
- Outside of baseball,
Kerry's favorite thing is fishing.
