- As part of a team
ritual for rookies, Barry was forced to wear a wedding dress with the Oakland A’s. He admitted
later he kind of liked it.
- Before Barry notched
his 200th strikeout in 2001, the only Oakland lefty to reach that plateau
was Vida Blue. Barrys 23 wins in 2002 were the most by an AL southpaw
since Frank Viola won 24 in 1988.
- In 2005, Barry
gave up fewer hits than innings pitched in 14 consecutive starts.
- Barry notched his
100th victory in August of 2006.
- Barry was named
to the AL All-Star team for the third time in 2006.
- Between 2001 and
2006, no pitchers in the majors made more starts than Barry.
- Barry’s first start against his former teammates in 2007 was a disaster. The Giants lost 15–3.
- Barry made his first relief appearance in a 2007 game against the San Diego Padres.
- Barry knocked in his first run as a major leaguer in a 2007 game against the Washington Nationals.
- Barry did not miss a start in his career until 2008.
- Barry grew up surrounded
by musical instruments. As a boy he played everything from the valve
trombone to the piano to the synthesizer.
- Barrys uncle
is actor Patrick Duffy of Dallas fame.
- Barrys grandmother
founded a church that preaches Metaphysical Christianity. The Teaching
of the Inner Christ Church now has more than 50,000 followers.
- Given the choice,
Barry says he would prefer to play the guitar like Jimi Hendrix than
pitch a perfect game. He has a mini-recording studio in his bedroom,
and takes music lessons in the off-season.
- One of Barry's
biggest thrills was joining the Dave Matthews Band on-stage in Cincinnati
for a rendition of "Crash into Me." Heather Mitts of the U.S.
Soccer team sang vocals.
- Barry says SpongeBob
SquarePants is one of his favorite shows.
- As of 2007, only
five major leaguers had contracts with more guaranteed money than Barry’s—Alex
Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Manny Ramirez, Todd Helton and Alfonso Soriano.
- Barry played himself
on a 2006 episode of Girlfriends.
- Personal grooming
has never been a strong point for the Oakland As, but Barrys unkempt
appearance once prompted GM Billy Beane to ask him if he combed his
air with a rock.
- Barry used to date
Susie Mora, a member of Mexicos Womens World Cup squad.
- Barry pitches and
hits lefthanded, but he does most everything else righthanded.
- Barry has appeared
as a wooden soldier in the Oakland Ballets performance of The
Nutcracker. He also did voiceover for the animated film Liberty
Vida Blue, 1975 SSPC
